MODULE 13

AI-Assisted Product Discovery

Use AI tools to accelerate research, synthesis, and ideation — without losing rigor.

Where AI Fits into Discovery

AI as a Discovery Accelerant

AI tools don't replace talking to real users — they accelerate the surrounding work: synthesis, pattern-finding, drafting, and ideation, freeing time for more direct user contact.

High-Value Use Cases

  • Interview transcription & synthesis — auto-transcribe calls, summarize themes, and tag recurring quotes across many interviews far faster than manual coding.
  • Survey analysis — cluster open-ended survey responses into themes at a scale impossible to read manually.
  • Drafting artifacts — generate first drafts of problem statements, persona outlines, or journey map stages from research notes, for a human to refine.
  • Competitive scanning — summarize competitor websites, reviews, and release notes quickly.
  • Brainstorming partner — use AI to generate a wide first pass of solution ideas (Module 8) before human refinement.

Risks and Guardrails

  • Hallucinated patterns — AI can confidently invent a "trend" that isn't actually in the data; always trace any AI-generated insight back to source quotes/data.
  • Synthetic users are not real users — AI-simulated "personas" answering questions are not a substitute for real interviews; they can suggest questions to ask, never validate a hypothesis.
  • Bias amplification — AI models can reflect the biases of training data; don't treat AI output as a neutral ground truth.

A Good Workflow

Use AI to do the first pass (transcribe, cluster, draft) and have a human always close the loop — validating against the raw data, adding judgment, and making the actual prioritization or design decisions.
